Module 6
The journey becomes sustainable as unconscious habits give way to conscious choices.
A NOTE FROM CAROL
Module 6 — Staying in the Space Without Giving Into Distraction
When discomfort arises, my first instinct is often to move away from it. Like most people, I have learned many ways to avoid pain. My coping strategies can look productive—staying busy, fixing, researching, planning, or distracting myself with other things that seem important.
When life felt especially out of control, I sometimes launched into a house-cleaning frenzy and became unusually focused on what everyone else should be doing, as if a clean kitchen might solve what was really bothering me.
Over time, I came to understand that self-discovery work is just that—work. Some days I have the energy to stay present with what is surfacing. Other days I need rest, comfort, or a temporary distraction. I have learned not to judge myself for that.
What matters most is that I return.
This practice has taught me to be gentle with myself, to choose consciously how I cope, and to trust that growth happens one return at a time.

We stay with the journey by choosing our response rather than letting it choose us.

When discomfort arises, it is natural to fall back on familiar patterns. Some help us rest and restore. Others quietly pull us away from what needs our attention. The first step is simply becoming aware of those patterns without judging yourself for having them.
This module invites you to respond challenges with greater intention. As unconscious habits become conscious choices, you can care for yourself wisely, return when you're ready, and continue the journey with greater intention.
Like the practice itself, this companion space continues to unfold.

PAUSE FOR REFLECTION & PRACTICE
Before moving on,
take a moment to pause.
These reflections are not meant to be completed perfectly.
Simply notice what arises.
REFLECTION PROMPT
When you feel overwhelmed, what response usually chooses you?
Is it busyness? Food? Entertainment? Research? Solving? Cleaning? Something else?
A SHORT PRACTICE
Imagine you are about to reach for one of your familiar distractions.
Pause before deciding what to do.
Take a slow breath.
Remind yourself:
I can choose my response.
If you need to rest, rest intentionally.
If you're ready to continue, continue intentionally.
Either way, let your next step be a choice rather than an automatic habit.
Now imagine returning to what felt overwhelming with a little more calm and intention.
The practice you are exploring in this module is part of a larger journey.
Each module shines light on a different aspect of awareness and healing, yet all eight work together to create greater spaciousness, presence, and peace.
Return often. Notice what changes. Trust what unfolds.

The journey of Holding Space is a journey home—
to yourself, to love, and to the freedom of caring without carrying.
