Explanation of "8-Limbs"
The Catalog
Yoga has more to do with the mind than the body. The poses help us "get the kinks out" and lead to better physical health. But, the point is, that it is very hard for the mind to function properly when one is in pain or feels upset, foggy or sleepy.
Learning the poses (called 'asana' in Sanskrit) is the 3rd Limb of Yoga. The 1st and 2nd Limbs are behavioral practices (called 'yamas' and 'nyamas'). The 4th is breathing practices (called 'pranayama'). The 5th is a practice of drawing your senses in so irritants don't bother you (called 'pratyahara'). The 6th and 7th are about focus and meditation (called 'dharana' and 'dhyana'). And the 8th is communion with God or a feeling of connection with the universe (called 'Samadhi'). Some call it is enlightenment or self-actualization. (See this page to find a video that goes over more details of the 8-Limbs)
It is not hard to understand what the 8-Limbs are; it is one thing to know what they are; it's an entirely different thing to apply them.
Below you will find a collection of various resources to move you along your life path toward greater joy, health, happiness, stability, and success.
Devotion to God, Part 1
-Invocation to the Lord of Yoga
The author of this translation of the Yoga Sutras (Makunda Stiles) begins with an Invocation to the Lord of Yoga. Carol admits that she does not know who the "Lord of Yoga" is as intended by the author, but she finds applying these words to her personal Lord invokes feelings of deep devotion in her native Christian beliefs.
This is not a page to dogmatically pass over believing that it has no application to you. However, if you do, it is OK, because He who is "the ocean of mercy" is ready to forgive our mistakes and acts of ignorance. ;-)

On Devotion- Part 1
-The Lord's Prayer in Aramaic
In part 2 about the Practice of Devotion, Carol explores the meaning of the Lord's Prayer that was given by Jesus Christ and recorded in the New Testament.
The translation from Aramaic to English deepens the meaning of what Jesus may have meant when He spoke this prayer in His native tongue of Aramaic. The feeling and meaning are similar to the Invocation to the Lord of Yoga (see "On Devotion- Part 1). "Studying these side by side has given voice to the deepest longings of my heart to love God with all of my (fiery) heart, might, mind (willing hands), and strength."
